About the Mute Video

Removing a sound track is a small operation with a surprising number of good reasons behind it.

Someone is talking in the background of a clip you want to share. A screen recording caught a notification chime, or your own breathing, or a conversation in the next room. A video is going on a website where it will autoplay, and a page that makes noise at a visitor unprompted is a page they leave. A clip is destined to sit under different music entirely, and the original sound would only fight it. In every one of those cases the picture is fine and the audio simply has to go.

What makes this worth doing properly rather than turning the volume to zero is that a silenced track is still a track. It still occupies space in the file, and — this is the part that matters — it still contains everything that was said. Anyone who receives that file can turn it back up. Removing the track deletes the recording; muting it merely hides it.

So this removes it. The track is dropped from the file altogether, and the picture is carried across untouched wherever the container allows it, which means muting a video costs no quality at all in the vast majority of cases. The result is also slightly smaller, since a sound track is no longer being stored.
