About the Trim Video

Almost every video anybody records is too long at one end or both. The camera runs for eight seconds before the thing worth filming happens, the interview keeps rolling while somebody reaches for the stop button, the screen capture opens on a desktop nobody meant to show. Taking those pieces off is the first edit most footage ever gets, and it should not involve installing a video editor with a timeline and a project file.

Name the moment it should start and the moment it should stop, and the section between those two points is written out as a new video. Times are read the way a player displays them, so 1:30 and 90 both mean a minute and a half, and either box can be left empty to run from the beginning or to the very end.

What happens underneath is worth knowing, because it explains why a trimmed file is not always as small as the fraction you kept. Compressed video is not a row of independent pictures. Most frames describe only what changed since a nearby key frame, so a cut that lands between key frames leaves frames that refer backwards to material no longer in the file. Those are rebuilt; the long stretches in between are carried across as they are. The cut therefore lands exactly where you asked rather than at the nearest key frame, which is the compromise cheaper tools make and the reason their output starts a second early.

The decoding and the encoding are done by this browser, using the same components it uses to play video on any other site. Your footage is never sent anywhere — which for a recorded meeting, a medical scan or a video of somebody's children is not a feature, it is the only acceptable arrangement.
