About the Video to Image

Sometimes the thing you need out of a video is a still picture: a thumbnail for a page, an illustration for a document, a frame showing the moment an error appeared on screen, a photograph of something that was only ever filmed.

Give a time and the frame at that moment comes back as a PNG or a JPEG. Times read the way a player shows them, so 1:24 works and so does 84. Leave it empty and you get the opening frame — which, worth knowing, is very often the least useful frame in the whole video, since most recordings begin before anything has happened.

PNG is the default and reproduces exactly what the decoder produced, pixel for pixel. That matters when the frame contains text, a user interface, a diagram or anything with hard edges, and it matters when the image is evidence of something. JPEG is a fraction of the size and is the better choice for a thumbnail nobody is going to inspect closely, with a quality slider for when the difference starts to show.

The width control resizes on the way out, which is the tidy way to produce a set of thumbnails at a fixed size without a second tool. Leave it at zero and you get the video's own dimensions.

One thing that occasionally surprises: asking for a frame very near the start of a file can return the nearest available picture rather than the exact instant, because a video has nothing to display before its first key frame. Ask for a moment a second or two later and the problem disappears.
