About the Group Expense Splitter

Shared money goes wrong slowly. Someone buys the groceries, someone else pays the electricity, a third person covers the cab home, and after a month nobody can say who is ahead — only that the friendship has started keeping score. This group expense splitter keeps the score instead, so the people do not have to.

Each expense records who paid and who it was for. Not everyone shares everything: the friend who skipped the film should not pay for a ticket, so every expense has its own list of who was in. And not everything divides evenly. Split a cost equally, by exact amounts, by percentage, or by shares — two shares for the couple, one for each single person — and mix the methods freely across the list.

Balances are kept in paise, never in rounded rupees. Dividing ₹100 three ways gives ₹33.34, ₹33.33 and ₹33.33, and the parts always add back to the bill, which is the property every other part of the page depends on.

Then comes the settlement. With "fewest payments" on, the page works out the shortest list of transfers that clears every balance — a group of eight people never needs more than seven. Turn it off and each person pays back exactly the people who covered for them, which takes more transfers but never routes money through someone who was not involved.

There is no account and no app to install for every member of the group. The ledger lives in the page's own address, after the # sign — a part of a URL browsers never send to a server. Bookmark the page to keep the ledger; send the address to bring the others in.

How to use it

  1. 1Add everybody who shares costs, by name.
  2. 2Add each expense: what it was, how much, who paid, and who it was for.
  3. 3Pick how each one divides — equally, by exact amounts, by percentage or by shares.
  4. 4Read the settlement at the top of the results, or copy the summary into the group chat.
  5. 5Send the share link if others want to check the working.

Questions

How can eight people settle in only seven payments?
Because a debt does not have to be repaid to the person it arose with. The page adds up where everyone stands, then repeatedly pays the largest debt into the largest credit. Each payment clears at least one person completely, so a group of n is always square within n − 1 payments.
Can one expense have more than one payer?
Yes. Choose several people under paid by and enter what each put in. Those amounts must add up to the expense — if two friends split a ₹3,000 bill at the till as ₹2,000 and ₹1,000, enter exactly that.
What happens to an expense I have not finished typing?
It is left out of the totals and marked, with the reason — percentages that make 90, say, or nobody ticked. Everything else keeps working, so a half-entered row never blanks the page.
Where is my data kept?
In the page's address and nowhere else. Every change rewrites the part after the #, which browsers never send to a server, so the site itself holds nothing — not on its servers and not in your browser's storage. Bookmark the page to keep it; it also sits in your browser history like any page you have visited.
