About the Trip Expense Splitter

A holiday abroad is two problems at once: four people paying for things in turns, and half of those payments made in a currency nobody is paid in. The trip expense splitter handles both, and handles the second the way a careful friend would — at the rate each of you was actually charged.

Most travel apps convert at today's market rate, fetched from the internet. That is the wrong number. The card statement says the hotel cost ₹38,640, not €420 at whatever the euro happens to be worth on the day you settle up, and a settlement on the market rate leaves the person whose card was used out of pocket by the spread and the foreign-transaction fee. Here you type the rate, once per currency, from the statement. No rate is looked up, and no request leaves the page.

Every expense keeps its own currency: flights booked at home in rupees, the hotel in euros, a dinner split by two people at the table in euros too. Choose which currency to settle in, and everything is converted into it before anyone's share is worked out.

The rest is the group splitter underneath. A cost can be shared out evenly, in fixed sums, in percentages or in weighted parts, among everyone or just the people who went — the surf lesson that only two of you took is charged to those two.

On the last evening, the page gives the shortest list of payments that squares the trip, ready to paste into the group chat. Add a category to each expense and it also shows where the money went: travel, stay, food, the things you did.

How to use it

  1. 1Add everyone on the trip, and choose the currency you will settle in.
  2. 2Enter each cost in the currency it was paid in.
  3. 3Type the exchange rate for each foreign currency — the one on the card statement.
  4. 4Mark who each cost was for; leave out anyone who skipped it.
  5. 5Copy the settlement and the share link into the trip's group chat.

Questions

Why not fetch the exchange rate automatically?
Because the rate that matters is the one your bank charged, which includes its margin and fees, and it is printed on your statement. A fetched rate would also mean the page making a network request with your trip's currencies in it, which this site does not do.
Can an expense be split by exact amounts in a foreign currency?
Yes. The amounts are checked in that currency first — €3.33, €3.33 and €3.34 make €10 — and only then converted, so a correctly typed split is never refused for a paisa of conversion rounding.
Two of us paid for one dinner together. How do I enter that?
Choose several people as payers and type what each put in. Those figures must add up to the bill, in the bill's own currency.
Does it work offline, on the road?
Once the page has loaded, the working happens entirely in your browser and the trip is held in the page's own address, so a patchy hotel connection does not stop you adding the day's expenses. Bookmark the page so the ledger survives the browser being closed.
